history

Ostmann Tower in Bielefeld

The company is based on the idea of the chemist Karl Ostmann to sell spices and dried herbs in portions that are easy to handle for the consumer. Before the Ostmann spice factory was founded in 1902, Ostmann packed his products in the back room of his own drugstore. A certain analogy can be made here with the Dr. August Oetker KG , whose founder August Oetker began in the back room of a pharmacy.

In the 1930s, Ostmann spices developed into a well-known brand name with the slogan "Ostmann spices - from the mill to the kitchen" and a uniform design.

In 1938, the company's headquarters moved to the Ostmann Tower on Märkische Strasse in Bielefeld, a former flour mill. The mill tower with its copper roof is still one of Bielefeld's landmarks and gives its name to the Ostmann tower district .

Ostmann was a pioneer in the industrial processing and filling of spices and herbs in consumer-friendly packaging. Production and administration moved to a new factory in 1977.

In the third generation, the company was run as a family business until 1994. After the Federal Cartel Office prohibited a takeover by the world's largest spice dealer McCormick & Company , Ostmann Gewürz was bought by the Australian conglomerate Burns Philp & Co. Ltd. accepted. Its food division expanded in the 1990s to include spices. In competition with McCormick, the Australian group and its German subsidiary got into economic difficulties, whereupon the Australians initiated the withdrawal from the spice business. At Ostmann Gewürz, falling sales figures between 1994 and 1998 led to a reduction in the number of employees from 700 to 320. As a result, Ostmann Gewitze was sold to the competitor Fuchs Gewürz in 1998 . Fuchs closed the Bielefeld production site with 320 employees, but continues to use the Ostmann Gewürz brand.
