The Diether Cancer place (until 2011 East Park called) is located in the inner-city Südostviertel the city of Essen . In its southwestern area it borders on the water tower on Steeler Berg .

history

The Ostpark, which was 1.25 hectare in size at the time, was laid out in 1902 and was intended to compensate for the residential quarters in the vicinity, which had been densely built up since industrialization. Up until the first half of the 20th century it was also used as a venue for concerts. At that time, there was a restaurant in the adjoining water tower on Steeler Berg, which has been a listed building since 1985.

A bomb attack by two airmen during World War I on September 24, 1916 claimed four lives, a military man and three children. A stele with the names of those killed and the inscription Den Fliegeropfern at the water tower 1916 is in the southwest cemetery .

For urban planning reasons, in particular the construction of the motorway (now the Ruhrschnellweg ) in the 1960s, the Ostpark lost its area accordingly. Today the park is in the north by the A40 (in the past Von-der-Tann-Straße was a little offset), in the east by the street Am Ostpark (formerly Metzerstraße), in the south by the Markgrafenstraße (formerly also) and in the west by the Steeler Straße (formerly Steeler Chaussee).

On November 1, 2011, the Ostpark was renamed Diether-Krebs-Platz in memory of the actor and cabaret artist who grew up in the southeast quarter . Diether Krebs was born in 1947 in the southeast quarter. He died in 2000 and was buried in the Ostfriedhof also located in the district . Krebs had always remained connected to his hometown.

Commemoration of the Ruhr uprising

Memorial stone for the Ruhr uprising in the Ostpark

During the Ruhr uprising on March 19, 1920 members of the Reichswehr and the Freikorps fought against troops of the Red Ruhr Army here at the water tower .

During the Weimar Republic , a memorial stone was erected in the park. He lists all 40 security policemen and supporters of the resident army killed in Essen in March 1920. The stone not only reminds of the eleven dead from the adjacent water tower, who are among the 40 listed here.

However, the total number and names of the workers who perished in the fighting remain unknown to this day. This memorial stone thus also had the political and moral goal of discrediting the workers and to highlight the achievements of the Reichswehr troops after the reconquest of the Ruhr area in April 1920.

The memorial stone was misused on March 19, 1934 by Hermann Göring for propaganda purposes.
