Ostroger Academy
The Ostroger Academy ( Ukrainian Острозька академія ) was a Greco-Latin-Slavic university in the Volhyn city of Ostroh .
It was founded by Prince Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski (1526–1608) around 1576.
In addition to the Old Church Slavonic , Greek and Latin languages as well as philosophy and theology, the seven liberal arts mathematics, astronomy, grammar, rhetoric and logic were taught.
The first holder of the rector's office was the writer Herasim Smotrytzkyj , the father of Meletij Smotryzkyj . The professors included a. Demjan Nalewajko , Christophor Philaret , Jan Latosch and Kyrillos Loukaris . One of the graduates was the hetman of the Zaporozhian Cossacks Petro Konashevytsch-Sahaidachnyj .
The Ostrog Academy existed until 1608. In its place, the Jesuit College was established in 1624 , founded by Princess Anna Aloysia Chodkiewicz. Based on the model of the Ostroger Academy, the school of the Lutsk Brotherhood and the school in Wolodymyr-Wolynskyj were founded around 1620 .
In 1994, thanks to the initiative of local celebrities, the Ostroger Academy was re-established, this time as the "National University" Ostroger Academy "". It is located in the premises of the former Capuchin monastery, the Hl.- Cyril and Methodius - Brotherhood and in newly constructed buildings. The post of rector is held by Igor Demidowitsch Pasitschnyk, father of the singer Olga Pasitschnyk .
