Oswald Hilliger (bell founder)
Oswald Hilliger (also Kanngießer ) (* around 1450 in Freiberg ; † 1517 ibid) was a bell founder in the 15th century in Freiberg.
Oswald Hilliger was the son of Nicol Hilliger (1435 to 1481), who worked in Freiberg around 1460. In 1469 he cast the big bell of the town church in Freiberg, which was lost in the town fire in 1471.
Oswald Hilliger first worked with his father, after his death he sold the foundry he had inherited and built a new foundry in 1482. After the second city fire in 1484, he cast new bells for the city's churches. One from 1487 is in the Nikolaikirche, four more are preserved in the cathedral , including the Great Susanne with over 4000 kg. He delivered bells to Saxony, Thuringia and Bohemia.
Martin (* 1484) was the most famous descendant of Oswald Hilliger's sons . Most of Freiberg's bells came from his workshop.
