Otogi Manga Calendar ( Japanese お と ぎ マ ン ガ カ レ ン ダ ー , Otogi Manga Karendā ) is an anime series by Otogi Productions. It was the first anime series to be shown on Japanese television, but the episodes were only minutes long. The first series with 25-minute episodes was Astro Boy from 1963.

content

The anime shows in the short episodes historical events that occurred on the respective date. The event is explained by means of a figure who did not know it before and is currently learning about it. The episodes not only consist of animated scenes, but also historical photographs or film recordings are shown.

Production and publication

The series was directed and scripted by Otogi Productions and produced by Yokoyama Ryūichi , Shin'ichi Suzuki and Michihiro Matsuya . Hiroshi Saitō was the artistic director . The historical recordings often come from the archive of the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper . The broadcaster TBS was involved in the production and also broadcast the series.

There are contradicting information about the broadcast. The first season ran on May 1, 1961 under the title Instant History ( イ ン ス タ ン ト ヒ ス ト リ ー , Insutanto Hisutorī ) and ran until February 24, 1962 on Fuji TV (CX). The second season, when the name was changed to Otogi Manga Calendar , started on June 25, 1962 and ran until July 4, 1964 or June 25, 1964 on TBS . A rerun of the episodes was broadcast on MBS from July 1, 1964 to June 30, 1966 .

Depending on the source, 312 or 54 episodes of three, five or 25 minutes each were produced. Older program plans suggest that the first episodes of Instant History were three minutes long, and later five minutes, like that of Otogi Manga Calendar . However, it is also assumed that the seasons could have been exactly the same.

The series served as a model for others as "instant history-like anime" ( イ ン ス タ ン ト ヒ ス ト リ ー 系 ア ニ メ , Insutanto Hisutorī-kei Anime ) and ran until December 30, 1984 on MBS. These include:
