Otto Ewald (director)

Otto Ewald (born March 18, 1848 in Hanover , † March 17, 1906 in Kassel ) was a German opera singer (tenor), theater director and author.

Life

Ewald was born the son of an instrument maker and, after attending the Polytechnic in Hanover, completed an apprenticeship at the art academy in Munich. But after he got a place at the conservatory through Wilhelm von Kaulbach , the director of the academy, he received a musical education and devoted himself to acting. From 1866 he appeared as a tenor buffo and vocal comedian in Würzburg. After a subsequent engagement in Nuremberg and then at the Wallner Theater in Berlin, he came to theaters in Breslau and Cologne. In 1871 he went to Kassel and was appointed director there in 1882. Until his retirement in 1901, he worked continuously in Kassel. In addition to his work as a director, he also wrote text books that were performed several times.
