Otto Möckel
Otto Möckel (born May 10, 1869 in Berlin , † January 23, 1937 in Berlin) was a German violin maker .
Otto Möckel, together with his brother Max Möckel, was a student of his father Oswald Möckel and was considered one of the most important violin makers and experts in Berlin at the turn of the century and afterwards. In 1930 he wrote a widely acclaimed standard work on violin making, which is still available today after numerous editions and modernizations.
Möckel first described the process of copying the curvature of the ceiling and floor with the help of isohypses . Before doing this, arching templates were set at defined points and the wood was leveled until the arching was achieved. The new method with isohypses is more precise, and you can visually recognize any irregularities in the curve.
