Otto Ohlsen

Otto Ohlsen (born December 18, 1916 in Aabenraa , † September 25, 2005 in Hamburg ) was director of the DRK tracing service for many years .

Life

Otto Ohlsen from North Schleswig did his Abitur at the Hamburg Christianeum . During the Second World War he was active in the general staff of the Wehrmacht . After the end of the war, he became involved in the tracing service of the German Red Cross from 1946. The organization had more than 14 million people missing in their lists.

In 1955 Ohlsen became director of the DRK tracing service center and also worked with the Eastern and Southeastern European countries during the Cold War. In 1982 Otto Ohlsen retired. In its 36 years of activity, the DRK tracing service managed to bring together 1,245,000 Germans with their relatives and clarify the fate of 350,000 missing civilians. Only 1,500 open inquiries out of 291,000 searches for missing children were recorded.

Otto Ohlsen leaves behind his wife Ilse, four daughters, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
