Otto Rellensmann
Otto Rellensmann (born February 16, 1895 in Hörde near Dortmund , † September 15, 1970 in Clausthal ) was a German professor of mine cutting and rector of the Clausthal mining academy .
Life
After the First World War , in which he had participated as a full-time volunteer, Rellensmann studied mining and geophysics at the Technical University Berlin-Charlottenburg and joined the then RSC-Corps Saxonia. After completing his studies in Berlin and taking the mine examination in Dortmund, he went to the USA and other countries in 1922 with Ludger Mintrop , the founder of Seismos GmbH , to research oil horizons. He followed him as an assistant to Breslau , when Mintrop in 1929 accepted a professorship for marrow science and geophysics at the technical university there . In 1932, Rellensmann became a mining and surveying councilor at the Wroclaw Mining Authority.
As the successor to Walter Nehm, Rellensmann accepted the professorship for mine surveying at the Clausthal mining academy in 1936, which he held until 1966.
During the Second World War he was assigned to the army in Romania for some time until 1943 as a staff officer for surveying and later at the mountain hut East in the Donets district in Ukraine.
During his thirty years as a professor at Clausthal, he did fundamental work in the field of mining damage, mine cracking and instrument science. The gyro in particular will always be associated with his name.
From 1954 to 1956 he was Rector and from 1956 to 1958 Vice Rector of the Clausthal Mining Academy. On November 6, 1968, he became an honorary citizen of the Clausthal University of Technology.
A few weeks before his death he received the news of the decision of the Senate of the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben to award him an honorary doctorate as the second German scientist, which until then had only been awarded five times. He does not live to see the award, it was carried out posthumously on January 30, 1971 as part of a memorial service in the auditorium of the old Clausthal mining academy.
