Otto Schack (born March 7, 1937 in Dessau ) is a German painter.

Life

Schack comes from a family of craftsmen. As a child he received private lessons in painting and drawing. After completing primary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a painter and graphic artist. Then he worked in the advertising department of the Wolfen paint factory. From 1960 to 1965 Schack studied at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art . He then settled in Berlin as a freelance painter and became a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . From 1965 to 1989, apart from painting, graphics and sculpture, he was primarily concerned with book design and art in architecture. In 1994 he moved with his wife, the painter Rosemarie Schack, with whom he has been married since 1965, and their two sons to Ackermannshof, a district of Falkenberg (Mark) . There they had acquired a property in 1970 that they expanded into the "Oberbarnimer Künstlerhof". Schack now mainly devoted himself to saving historical buildings and actively preserving monuments. In 1992 he founded the artist group "Black and White". From 1995 to 2008 he worked as a teacher in the fields of art and restoration.

The Schacks are the parents of the painter Philipp Schack , who died in 2006 , whose artistic estate they look after, and the painter, graphic artist and sculptor Jan E. Schack.

“At Otto Schack everything is measure. The result is extremely simple on the painting surface. Determined by the desire for objectivity and anonymity, in his flat constructivism based on basic geometric shapes, everything subjective and affective is hidden. The modifications derived from rectangles, squares and circles are divided into different colors and brought into proportion to one another. They appear as an architectural-technical structure, the formal unit of which stands for rigor, for sublimity and in a certain sense for finality ... The few colors black, red and white act in this context as a fact out of themselves, especially since all traces of painterly handwriting are more personal Expression of the artist have been erased. ”- Herbert Schirmer Schack says of himself that he has committed himself to the ideas of the Bauhaus . He stands for an art that is rooted in the craft and wants to serve people. He has developed a wide range of artistic and practical technical skills. In addition to painting, he deals with sculpture, graphics, book illustration and the design of book covers, art in construction , installation and environmental design. In addition to his direct artistic activity, he made it his task, in close interaction with his wife, to influence society artistically and in terms of art education. For example, they took on orders for the renovation and beautification of homes (including a children's home in Großschönebeck and a school for the physically handicapped in Börnicke) and work artistically and educatively with children and young people.
