occupation

Out of the Present is a documentary by Andrei Ujica from 1995. It describes the unplanned extended stay of the Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev on the Russian space station Mir . It was the first time that a 35mm film camera was used in space.

content

The film begins with the docking of Sojus TM-12 to the space station. In the following 92 minutes (corresponds to one orbit around the earth) one witnesses the on-board routine of a long-term crew, repeatedly interrupted by panoramic images of the passing earth, but also of the August putsch in Moscow . The arrival of Soyuz TM-13 with Franz Viehböck is a highlight . At the insistence of Kazakhstan , a Kazakh science cosmonaut was on board who had no long-term training, which is why Krikalev had to spend six more months in space. In the end you can see him resting on a sofa after 300 days of weightlessness.

production

The film was mainly produced at the editing table, the footage was taken by the long-term crews. Transporting the camera to the space station is said to have consumed about half of the budget.
