Outward Bound (v. Eng. Outward bound, a fully loaded ship ready to sail) describes a short school founded in 1941 by Laurence Holt and the reform teacher Kurt Hahn in Aberdovey (Wales) as well as a group of short schools that are part of the Outward Bound organization are.

Pedagogical orientation

Outward Bound sees itself as the heir to Kurt Hahn's short school idea. In 1931 he had set up a short school in Salem Castle for the German youth, who were marked by the chaos of war and post-war chaos. In the Hahnscher Impression short schools, children from completely different social backgrounds were to learn with and from each other for four weeks. He wanted to “heal” society primarily through the idea of “service”, physical training, diligence (expeditions and tours) and self-initiative (projects). The learning experiences across social classes should contribute to the recovery of the entire nation. The Second World War made another aspect of this peace education important: the internationality of the participants. This is how the “ United World Colleges ” developed all over the world. With them, Outward Bound also found international distribution on all continents.

target

Outward Bound supports people in their individual development as well as groups through experiences in and with nature. This goal is being implemented in Germany and Austria at the two fixed locations in Schwangau (Allgäu), Baad (Kleinwalsertal, Vorarlberg) and at numerous mobile locations in Germany and at over 40 international locations on all continents. Central values are still service, diligence, self-initiative and physical and mental health.

history

The reform pedagogue Kurt Hahn founded the association Outward Bound - German Society for European Education e. V.

The pioneers of experiential education were the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the life artist Henry David Thoreau . Kurt Hahn was also influenced by the ideas of the American thinkers John Dewey and William James and the German sports educator Bernhard Zimmermann.

Shortly after the association was founded by educators Kurt Hahn, Minna Specht and Marion Dönhoff in 1951, short schools were founded in Weißenhaus on the Baltic Sea in 1952, in Baad in 1957 and in Berchtesgaden in 1968. In 1986, training for specialists and managers took place for the first time. Two years later the Königsburg educational center was founded. The first nationwide conference at Outward Bound in 1991 made a contribution to experiential education in the educational landscape.

The largest German additional training in experiential education - ZAB - began in 1993, and the training centers at Schloss Kröchlendorff (1993), Schwangau (1995) and the Outward Bound Academy (2005) were founded in the years to come.

In 2006 the opening of the Erzgebirge location was celebrated and in 2007 new cooperation partners were found in Havelberge and Florence.

Since 2009, following the insolvency of the German Society for European Education eV, Outward Bound has been managed by the newly founded Outward Bound Germany eV.
