history
The name is first recorded in a message about the construction of Aberdyfi Castle in 1156. The mound of earth ( Motte ) still in existence today , on which the earlier castle was built, is not in the area of today's municipality, but on the opposite side of the mouth of the Dyfi in neighboring County Ceredigion . In 1216, several Welsh princes probably agreed the Aberdyfi Agreement in the castle .
Since the middle of the 16th century at the latest, there has been a small fishing port in what is now the village of Aberdyfi, initially with a few residential buildings. The port later gained importance through the shipping of lead ore mined in the region and, particularly in the mid-19th century, the shipping of slate (see the slate industry in Wales ).
From the Victorian era to the present day, Aberdyfi was and is popular as a seaside resort and retirement home. Among the most prominent residents who took up residence in Aberdyfi at an advanced age were the writers Oliver Onions and Berta Ruck .
In 1941 the German émigré Kurt Hahn founded the Outward Bound organization's first short school in Aberdyfi, together with British educators and the German émigré Bernhard Zimmermann .
