The Ouzo 12 goes back to a tavern that the Kalogiannis family ran in Constantinople . At that time, ouzo was served from large wooden barrels, barrel number 12 was the most popular in that establishment. The family moved to Thessaloniki in 1925 and then to Piraeus in 1950 . Barrel no. 12 gave the Kalogiannis family distillery its name. She was one of the first to sell ouzo in small bottles, thus establishing the leading ouzo brand in Greece.
The Ouzo 12 brand was bought by Metaxa . When Metaxa was sold to Distillers & Vintners (IDV) in 1989 , the family retained 70% of the shares in Kaloyannis Bros SA., The producer of Ouzo 12. The company is now part of the Campari Group.
