Ovastevna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ovastevna is an annual festival on the island Nólsoy / Faroe Islands in August.

The Ovastevna ("Ove Meeting") has been held since 1994 in honor of Ove Joensen ("Ruder-Ove") from Nólsoy, who rowed from the Faroe Islands to Copenhagen in 1986 and drowned in 1987.

The proceeds from this festival will go to the local swimming pool , which was designed on Ove Joensen's own initiative after he returned from Copenhagen. The Ovastevna is accompanied by a regatta on the Sundini from Eiði to Hósvík , after which the boats then go to Nólsoy, where one of the largest Faroese dance events takes place. In 2004 there were 3,500 visitors here - more than ten times as many as Nólsoy's population. In 2006 there were around 4,000.

Since 1997 there has been a swimming competition over the 4 km wide Nólsoyarfjørður on the occasion of Ovastevna ( see there ).
