The Ovittunnel ( Turkish Ovit Dağı Tüneli ) is a motorway tunnel on Mount Ovit between İkizdere in the province of Rize and İspir in Erzurum in northeastern Turkey . With a length of 14.3 km, the two tubes are the longest tunnel in the country.

The tunnel connects Erzurum with Rize to create a faster connection to the Black Sea in Eastern Anatolia . The previous connection between Erzurum and Rize will be shortened by the tunnel from 250 km to 200 km. The first plans for such a project existed as early as 1880 at the time of the Ottoman Empire , but nothing was realized. In 1930, however, a pass road was built over the Ovit with the use of 1500 workers, which connects İspir with İkizdere and leads to an altitude of 2600 m. However, this route (D 925) is often impassable in winter.

The start of construction work on the tunnel and its connecting roads was lavishly celebrated on May 12, 2012 in the presence of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . Commissioning of the tunnel was planned for the beginning of 2016, but was now delayed until summer 2016 and then - until 2017 and the last one was officially inaugurated on June 13, 2018. Upon completion, the tunnel is expected to become the fifth longest road tunnel in the world .
