Oxyloma is agenus of snails from the family of amber snails (Succineidae) in the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora).
features
The representatives of the genus Oxyloma have pointed-egg-shaped to oblong-egg-shaped, often strongly flattened cases with no more than four very rapidly increasing turns. The last turn usually takes up over 3 quarters of the total height. The skin is very thin, the color varies from light yellow, light horn-colored to almost colorless. The ornamentation of the postembryonic convolutions consists of very fine radial stripes or of relatively coarse, irregular ribs. The mouth is ovate to elongated ovoid and typically pointed at the top. Usually a more or less strong spindle lamella is formed.
In the reproductive system there is a penis with an epiphallus . The penis itself is completely surrounded by a sheath and thus closed off from the mantle cavity. The penis has a more or less extended blind sack ("flagellum") at the junction between penis and epiphallus. The blind sac ("flagellum") is clearly separated from the penis. Internally, there are well-developed pilaster structures that gradually disappear at the penis / epiphallus junction. The penis retractor starts at the apex of the penis, right next to the thin, moderately long sperm duct. The vagina is usually thick-tubular, short to moderately long, sometimes slightly tortuous. Accordingly, the free fallopian tube is short to moderately long. The seminal vesicle is rounded to oblong-egg-shaped with a moderately long, comparatively thick stalk.
Similar genera
The genera Oxyloma and Succinea cannot be reliably differentiated according to their housing morphology. The clear differences can only be found in the anatomy of the sex apparatus.
Geographical distribution
The species of the genus Oxyloma occur in the northern hemisphere, but also in South Africa.
Taxonomy and systematics
The taxon Oxyloma was established in 1885 by Carl Agardh Westerlund . Type species is Succinea hungarica Hazay, 1881, a synonym of Succinea dunkeri L. Pfeiffer, 1865. Schileyko (2007) divides the genus into three subgenera. The following list of species is uncertain as there has not yet been a comprehensive revision of the genus. Often it is also unclear to which of the subgenera the species will be placed in the future. The gender of the species is also controversial. While some authors treat the gender of the genus as neuter, other authors assume the gender of the genus as feminine. The name Oxyloma is derived from the ancient Greek ὀξύς / oxys, pointed and τό λῶμα / loma, gen. Λωματος / lomatos = edge, the gender of the genus is thus neutral.
