Pál Gyulai

Pál Gyulai [ ɟulɒi ], falsely Paul of Gyulai (* 25. January 1826 in Cluj , Transylvania ; † 9. November 1909 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian poet and critic .

Life

Gyulai completed his school days in his hometown and later taught himself at the local high school. He then worked as a journalist in Pest until he was appointed professor for Hungarian literary history at the University of Budapest in 1875 . From 1858 he was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences , from 1870 secretary of the first (linguistic and beautiful science) class of the same and from 1881 president of the Kisfaludy Society .

As such, Gyulai wrote numerous reviews and studies, including a. about the writer Sándor Petőfi , his brother-in-law. He published these in the Budapest Revue, which he edited, and other magazines.
