history

Development of the location in the GDR

Prehistory of the location

On today's premises in Brattendorf there was a clay pit of a brick factory, which was located on the adjacent property. Today's factory was originally intended to house a brick factory again and was designed accordingly. Due to a wallpaper bottleneck in the GDR, the original project was canceled by the party leadership and the facility was converted into a production facility for fiberglass wallpaper and glass fabric with its own fiberglass tape production.

In 1973 the foundation stone was laid for today's production site as part of the Haselbach glass factory on the site of the former brickworks and fiberglass production began.

By taking over a fiberglass manufacturing process from the Schuller company in Wertheim , a two-stage manufacturing process for manufacturing fiberglass products was mastered. This manufacturing process was unique in the GDR. The Schuller company thus continued its company history. Company founder Hermann Schuller discovered the industrial potential of glass fiber in the 19th century and founded the glass factory in Haselbach, Thuringia, in 1896, to which Brattendorf was a part of the company at that time. Thanks to the nozzle drawing process he had developed, Hermann Schuller succeeded for the first time in producing spinnable glass threads with a precisely defined diameter as "rolled goods". It was also the aim of the Schuller company to gain market access to the then sealed off Eastern markets.

The typical GDR fiberglass wallpapers with strong, floral patterns in the 1970s and early 1980s were exclusively woven and printed in Brattendorf.

In the mid-1970s, as a result of a reorganization of the combines, together with Trisola Steinach , the Haselbach Glassworks was separated from the Technisches Glasseidenwerk Oschatz Combine and assigned to the VEB Werk für Technisches Glas Ilmenau . Exports to the Federal Republic of Germany could be realized mainly through the glass silk blend fabric for bitumen roof sealing sheeting.

From 1981 until the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Brattendorf branch existed as an independent part of the company under the roof of Trisola Steinach, to which the Steinach glassworks, the Lauscha glassworks , the Taubenbach foam glassworks and the Haselbach glassworks also belonged.

After the fall of the Wall, the five Trisola Steinach companies were converted into independent GmbHs. Today's PD Glasfaser GmbH Brattendorf / Thür. Operated under the name "Brattendorfer Glasfaser GmbH" at that time.

Products from the GDR era

  • Fiberglass blended fabric
  • printed fiberglass wallpaper
  • Wall calendars, posters
  • Polyglass scrim

At that time, fiberglass wallpaper was already being marketed under the brand name "haglasta" (Haselbacher fiberglass wallpaper).

Restructuring

After the shares were transferred to the Treuhandanstalt in 1992, the company was privatized and re-established in 1993 under the name "PD Glasfaser GmbH Brattendorf / Thür." As a consequence of the new requirements of the competition, there was also a reorientation towards the product branches of glass fiber wallpaper, textile glass fabric and glass mesh fabric.

Development of the sales of fiberglass wallpaper after the fall of the Wall

Due to the historical development of the company as a pure part of the operation, in the GDR era, market access was only available through the combine’s sales department. The establishment of an independent sales department for the glass fiber wallpaper from Brattendorf can therefore be seen as one of the greatest challenges after the company was re-established. In a very short time, the old structures of the planned economy-oriented combine had to be replaced by market-based structures. Since there were no customer contacts, all external business relationships had to be rebuilt in order to cover costs as quickly as possible. In the meantime PD Glasfaser GmbH Brattendorf has customer contacts and sales representatives in Germany as well as Western, Northern and Eastern Europe.

The “haglasta” brand was taken over after the company was re-established. The previous annual peak value of 20 million m 2 of glass fabric was achieved in 2007.

In September 2012 the merger of PD Glasfaser GmbH with PD Industriegesellschaft mbH took place to secure and increase the competitiveness of the location. The part of the company has been operating under the name PD Industriegesellschaft mbH GLASFASER BRATTENDORF since then.
