history

Pantaleon Gerhard Coenraad Hajenius

The history of Hajenius goes back to 1826. In that year the 19-year-old Pantaleon Gerhard Coenraad Hajenius (* 1806 in Arnhem , † 1889 in Amsterdam) moved from Doesburg to Amsterdam. He opened his own tobacco shop in the “Rijnstroom” hotel on Vijgendam.

The location was very advantageous for Hajenius as it was close to the tobacco exchange. Hajenius had his cigars made from imported tobacco and was very successful. His cigars became known beyond the national borders and appreciated by connoisseurs. Over time, his branch became too small and his business moved.

His customers were among the most distinguished. Therefore it became necessary to move into a correspondingly representative building. He had an elegant house on the Rokin built from German sandstone by the architect Adolf Daniël Nicolaas van Gendt . This house was also named “De Rijnstroom” (The Rhine). The move took place in 1915 and should be the last.

The main shop was built in the Art Deco style. Inside, it was decorated with Italian marble, ornate ornamentation, chandeliers and wooden wall paneling. The company's products are displayed behind glass cabinets in several consecutive rooms. However, it is also used for cultural purposes and receptions.

Hajenius' successor was his business partner Hendrik Willem Nijman (* 1831 in Zutphen ; † 1892 in Amsterdam), whose descendants became the owners one after the other until the 1990s. Hajenius was appointed purveyor to the royal Dutch court. His successor Nijman received the title of purveyor to the imperial court . Hajenius also supplied the kings of Belgium, Romania, Sweden and Norway, the Duke of Nassau, the Prince of Wales and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia.
