PD-50 (Project 7454) was the largest floating dock in Russia and one of the largest in the world. It sank in an accident in 2018.

history

The dock was built in 1980 in Sweden by Götaverken AB for the Soviet Navy and is used by the Russian Navy for the maintenance and repair of their largest warships. The dock was last stationed in the repair yard No. 82 in Roslyakowo in the Murmansk Oblast .

In 2010, the dock was taken out of service by the Navy and has been privately operated by Repair Yard No. 82 since then. The shipyard No. 82 has belonged to the Russian oil company Rosneft since 2013, which wants to set up a base for the construction of oil platforms there.

Calls

Scrapping the Kursk

PD-50 was used to lift the Kursk in 2000 . After the damaged submarine was lifted, it was brought to the dock and scrapped there.

Shipyard accident with the Admiral Kuznetsov

The Kuznetsov in the Dock (2015)

On October 30, 2018, the PD-50 sank while the Admiral Kuznetsov was undocking in Kola Bay . The cause was a power failure, which caused the floating dock to be lowered in an uncontrolled manner. The ballast tanks on the port side filled up very quickly, causing the PD-50 to list and eventually sink.

The porter could still be pulled from the dock into the bay. The starboard crane of the dock with a weight of 70 t fell on the Kuznetsov and punched a 4 m × 5 m hole in the deck, and the port crane fell into the water. One worker is missing and four others fell into the water and suffered hypothermia. The dock is completely under water, which is up to 60 m deep at this point.

In 2018 it was not yet known if and when the dock would be lifted. In May 2019, the lifting of the dock was abandoned. The missing dock capacity is now to be compensated by merging two floating docks of the 35th ship repair company "Svjesdotschka" ( Russian 35 СРЗ ).
