Christine Stix-Hackl (born November 1957 as Christine Hackl ; † October 24, 2018 ) was an Austrian lawyer and diplomat . From 2000 to 2006 she was Advocate General at the European Court of Justice , then Austrian Ambassador to Luxembourg and from 2012 Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations in Vienna .

Life

Christine Stix-Hackl studied law and interpreting for English and Italian at the University of Vienna . She completed her studies with the promotion to Doctor of rights from. At the Collège d'Europe in Bruges she completed a postgraduate degree in European law .

In 1982 she began her career in the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and worked, among other things, at the Austrian Embassy in Prague . In 1984 she became an EU expert in the international law office of the Foreign Ministry, and from 1989 she worked in the legal service of the EU Commission. In 1992 she returned to the Foreign Ministry as head of the EU legal service in the international law office, where she was involved in negotiations on Austria's accession to the EU . From 1995 she represented the Republic of Austria in proceedings before the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

In 2000 she was elected Austrian Consul General in Zurich and on the proposal of the Federal Government Schüssel I and with the votes of the Greens and the SPÖ as Advocate General at the European Court of Justice . In October 2005 she was elected First Advocate General by the Judges and Advocates General. In 2007 she succeeded Walter Hagg as the Austrian ambassador in Luxembourg . In 2012 she returned to Vienna; Until her death, she was Austria's permanent representative at the United Nations, succeeding Helmut Böck .

She has lectured at the Vienna University of Economics , the University of St. Gallen and the University of Saarbrücken, among others . She has authored several books and over 100 individual works, mainly on the subject of European law.

Christine Stix-Hackl was married to the FPÖ politician Rüdiger Stix and had a daughter.
