Walter Hagg

Walter Hagg (born December 30, 1948 in Vienna ) is an Austrian diplomat ; he was the Austrian ambassador to Luxembourg (2003 to 2007) and Ireland (2007 to 2012).

Life

Walter Hagg studied law at the University of Vienna from 1968 to 1972 . In 1972 he received his doctorate in law and from 1973 to 1974 was assistant to Rudolf Hoke at the Institute for German Legal History at the University of Vienna . From 1974 to 1976 Walter Hagg attended the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna .

Walter Hagg is a trained opera singer. From 1966 to 1972 he was taught singing at the Vienna Conservatory with Judith Hellwig and from 1972 to 1976 at the Vienna Academy for Music and Performing Arts with Luise Scheit.

He has been married to Aglaë, nee Thun and Hohenstein , since 1978 , and has a daughter and two sons.

Diplomatic career

After joining the Austrian Foreign Service, Walter Hagg was in the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs (BMaA) until 1977 . There he dealt with bilateral economic relations with Eastern European countries and the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). Until 1978 he was sent to the 1st follow-up meeting of the CSCE in Belgrade , after which he was in the Austrian embassy in Rome from 1978 to 1981 and in the Austrian embassy in Lagos until 1984 , where he was the first assigned. From 1984 to 1988 Walter Hagg was deputy head of the General Secretariat in the Austrian Foreign Ministry, and then became envoy , first from 1988 to 1993 at the embassy in Rome, where he played a leading role in the settlement of disputes regarding the autonomy of South Tyrol , then from 1993 to 1996 at the embassy in Paris . Returning to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was head of Department 2 of Section II from 1997 to 2003, which as a political section was responsible for South Tyrol , Italy , Turkey , Greece , Cyprus , Spain , Portugal and the Holy See .

Walter Hagg had his first accreditation as ambassador in Luxembourg , where he succeeded Christian Strohal as Austrian ambassador from 2003 to 2007 . From 2007 to 2012 he was Ambassador to Ireland. His successor there was Thomas Nader .
