Opuntia pituitosa is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Opuntia pituitosa grows shrubby with only a few branches and reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters. The gray-green to green obovate shoot sections are 10 to 20 centimeters long, 6 to 10 centimeters wide and up to 2 centimeters thick. The gray areoles have short brown glochids , which are occasionally missing. The up to four needle-like, straight, gray thorns have a brown tip and are 1 to 7 centimeters long.

Nothing is known about the flowers . The spherical fruits are dark red, up to 4 centimeters long and have the same diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Opuntia pituitosa common in the Argentine province of Corrientes on the Río Uruguay .

The first description as Platyopuntia pituitosa by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1919. James Iliff placed the species in 1997 in the genus Opuntia .
