Pebe - official spelling PEBE , derived from the initials PB of the company's founder Paul Bernhardt (born December 2, 1928 in Lößnitz (Erzgebirge) ) - was a toy brand for plastic construction sets from the German Democratic Republic .

The principle corresponded to the Lego system, they were advertised as “single-tap stone construction kit made of plastic for the little builder”. The terminal blocks looked very similar to this in large parts. The size was taken over from LEGO and was called the 8 mm system. In large parts, PEBE could be combined with LEGO, but there are sometimes problems with sticking together and holding each other, even when combining PEBE blocks. In addition, the bricks were prone to aging due to the polystyrene used, became increasingly brittle over time and could not haptically compete with those of Lego.

In addition, the bricks were a bit flatter than LEGO. Although the wealth of shapes only corresponded to the basic Lego system, there were also bricks with other shapes than Lego. The underside of the stones, which guaranteed a firm plug connection, was designed completely differently (bars and tenons instead of tubes) and also varied greatly between individual PEBE series.

The strong similarity to the Lego system was specifically promoted. However, many of their own stones were also developed. In the GDR, there was a second, similar, in principle, compatible neither with nor pebe with Lego System - the Formo -stones. Both companies used polystyrene to manufacture the stones , which made the stones very brittle. The idea of plug-in modules goes back to the anchor modules developed in the 19th century . With the development of plastics , several providers (more or less independently of each other) developed the system of fixed plug connections from it.

Due to a legal dispute with LEGO in the mid-1980s, the knobs and undersides were changed so that they were no longer compatible with LEGO. This new 8mm module was named PEBE 2000.

The construction plans of the construction kits were initially based on the anchor blocks. In particular, construction plans for inanimate houses, businesses, petrol stations, airports, roads were given to the basic construction kits. In addition, the car series and the military vehicles, which could be reproduced on a scale of 1:75 or 1:50, were very successful, whereby the construction sets of the 1:75 series - the mini-boxes - were much smaller and not with the standard PEBE compatible. This 5 mm module was derived from the MODULEX manufactured by LEGO and its basic shape was a cube with an edge length of 5 mm.

Production took place from the late 1950s to 1984 by VEB Plastica Bad Kösen and from 1985 to 1990 by VEB Chemische Fabrik Bad Kösen . After reunification , production was continued as Pebe GmbH & Co. KG until the mid-1990s and then discontinued.

Coloring

The number of colors in a box was seldom more than four; Only by combining several boxes could a greater variety of colors emerge, which - due to the strong variance in the color mix - was ultimately significantly higher. On the one hand, deviations arose from the use of different raw materials in the production process, and on the other hand, these building blocks aged at different rates due to the material used, so that many different color nuances were created.

The colors used by Pebe in parlance were: red, yellow, green, armor green, light blue, blue, white, gray, dark gray, anthracite, clear and transparent brown .
