The PKP class SM04 is a simple shunting locomotive of the type 409Da.

history

Based on the predecessor series Ls150 , the Polish locomotive factory Fablok developed the locomotive type 409Da in 1959. Except for the somewhat more powerful diesel engine, this is almost identical to the type Ls150. What was new was the possibility of installing an even more powerful motor at a later date without too much effort. The main customers for the series were factory and industrial railways in Poland. There they were used for light shunting and maneuvering tasks. In the meantime, the Zastal company has taken over production.

In the 1990s, the Polish Railway PKP procured two type 409Da locomotives and put them into service as SM04-001 and SM04-002. They were used at stations in light shunting service together with the SM03 series. There was no further procurement, the two locomotives were taken out of service and parked in 2000. The locomotive SM04-002 was taken over from the Polish Railway Museum in Chabówka .
