The locomotives of the series SP32, SP43 and SP49 of the Polish State Railways (PKP) are diesel locomotives in the medium power range for traffic with passenger trains .

history

In order to replace steam locomotives in passenger train traffic, the PKP needed a medium-capacity diesel locomotive at the beginning of the eighties. That is why the locomotive factory “23. August “ in Bucharest ordered 200 diesel locomotives, which were equipped with some specifications especially for the PKP. They received adjustable driver's desks, electrodynamic brakes and a three-phase generator . The bogies, suspension and traction motors, on the other hand, were almost identical to those of the ST43 series . The two machines first delivered in 1985 had double traction control and were originally referred to as SP49 001 and 002. The series machines were ultimately not equipped with this control and the two prototypes were also redrawn as SP32. Due to the political upheaval in Eastern Europe, the collapse of the Council for Mutual Economic Aid and the resulting sharp decline in rail traffic, a total of only 150 series locomotives were delivered. The quality of workmanship of the locomotives, as with other products of the company - for example the DR class 119 , left a lot to be desired and defective motors, generators and compressors were so commonplace that up to a third of the stock was temporarily inoperable. The SP32 073, 096, 147, 148 and 149 machines received a new MTU 12V396TC12 diesel engine , which was built under license in Romania .

The locomotives were retired by July 2004. In the years 2000 to 2003, ten locomotives received a fundamental overhaul, which, in addition to other minor improvements, included the installation of the slightly more powerful MTU 12V396TC14 engine. These locomotives were then redrawn to the sub-series SP32 201-210 - in the order of the new numbers it was the former SP32 130, 046, 044, 053, 113, 043, 062, 076, 110 and 128. In December 2017 the last of these locomotives parked.
