The PMM Wolna ( Russian ПММ "Волна", паромно-мостовая машина "Волна" ) is a military amphibious floating speed bridge and transfer vehicle from Soviet production, which was developed in 1974 and manufactured until the mid-1980s. In total, only 24 vehicles were produced for the armed forces of the USSR. The PMM-2 system was planned as the successor system.

Development history

The PMM system was originally intended to replace the GSP-55 tank ferry and the PMP pontoon park after development work was completed in 1974 and delivery of the first units began. The PMM ferry fleet, however, turned out to be impractical and unsuitable with regard to the operational requirements. A central design flaw of the PMM vehicle was the open wheel arches of the four-axle base vehicle, which caused significantly increased swimming resistance and more difficult maneuverability. As a result, only 24 PMMs had been delivered by 1985 and they were withdrawn from the armed forces promptly.

vehicle

The PMM is based on the heavy four-axle 8 × 8 truck BAZ-135 , a further development of the SiL-135, which was mass-produced by the Soviet vehicle manufacturer Zavod imeni Lichatschowa from 1966. A wheeled vehicle was specifically agreed when designing the rapid bridge system in order to achieve higher transfer times and higher speeds on land. Finally, the BAS-135MB variant was used, which has a motorization that deviates from the SIL-135. The drive unit is a V8 diesel engine of the type JaMS-238 from the engine construction company Jaroslawski Motorny Sawod . The power transmission was adapted to the individual unit. A four-person cabin was equipped with folding windows and two rows of seats. If necessary, it could accommodate up to six people.

Bridge and translation technology

The operation was planned in the pontoon park SPP , which comprised a total of 24 PMM, 4 river and bank pontoons, 2 carpet vehicles of the PMP and 4 transition parts as well as 4 tug boats on 18 KrAS-255B . The load-bearing capacity of the rapid floating bridge was 50 tons and the maximum length of the bridge was 260 meters. The bridge should have been completed within 30 minutes.

The basic vehicle BAZ-135MB, with an adapted cabin of the SIL-135LM, carried two pontoons , which were placed on the vehicle in the transport position. In the operating state, they are folded down from both sides of the vehicle. In ferry operation, the water is propelled by two lowerable, swiveling propellers that are mounted on the rear of the vehicle. An unloaded PMM unit could reach 10.9 km / h and a loaded unit up to 9 km / h. The load capacity of one machine was 42 tons. By combining up to three vehicles, triple ferries with a load capacity of 84 or 126 t could be put together.
