PPL Corporation (Pennsylvania Power and Light) is a United States energy company headquartered in Allentown , Pennsylvania . The company is listed in the S&P 500 share index.

PPL supplies electricity primarily in Pennsylvania and Montana . PPL mainly operates power plants that run on coal, crude oil or natural gas. However, PPL also owns the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station , northeast of Berwick, Pennsylvania.

history

PPL was founded in 1920 after a merger of eight smaller Pennsylvania plants. The company extended its reach to central and northeastern Pennsylvania for several decades. This changed after deregulation in the 1990s.

In 1998, 13 power plants were taken over by Montana Power .

In late April 2010, PPL announced that it would acquire E.ON US LLC , an E.ON subsidiary and owner of regional utilities Louisville Gas & Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company , for $ 7.625 billion .
