The Pa-Sak-Chonlasit-Dam ( Thai เขื่อน ป่า สัก ชล สิทธ , RTGS Khuean Pa Sak Chonlasit ; also written "Pasak Jolasid") is a dam in the Thai province of Lop Buri , which the seasonally strongly fluctuating water levels of the Mae Nam Pa Sak should compensate.

requirements

The Pa Sak valley forms the main part of the Phetchabun Mountains in Phetchabun Province . Since the catchment area of the river is quite narrow, the amount of water in the river changes very strongly depending on the season. This was a problem for local agriculture: in the rainy season it caused floods , in the dry season it fell dry. In order to be able to regulate the water level, investigations were made from 1965 to create a retention basin . This resulted in the project of the Pa-Sak-Chonsalit dam and reservoir .

construction

Almost 30 years later, in 1994, the political decision was made to build the facility. In the following years the dam was built and the lake was dammed.

Sections of the Kaeng Khoi Junction – Bua Yai Junction railway line and three railway stations along the route fell into the area that flooded the new lake . These sections were re-routed west of the existing line, partly on dams in the bank area, connected by 5 large bridges with lengths between 555 m and 1415 m. Construction began on April 25, 1997. The new line went into operation on June 19, 1998. Of the discontinued stations, only Ban Nong Bua was rebuilt in 2008.

Data

The dam is 4,860 m wide and 31.5 m high. The reservoir holds about 0.8 km³ of water, which corresponds to about a third of the amount of water that the river transports annually. A hydroelectric power station in the outflow of the reservoir also generates around 6.7  MW of electrical power.

Tourist importance

The reservoir developed into a popular excursion destination and recreation area. The Thai State Railways (SRT) occasionally runs special trains here , which then also make photo stops at two vantage points .
