Pablo de Mendíbil

Pablo de Mendíbil (born April 1788 in Alegría de Álava , Álava , † 1832 in London ) was a Spanish Romanist and Hispanist who worked in France and England.

life and work

Pablo de Mendíbil y Grao studied law at the University of Zaragoza . He emigrated to Bordeaux in 1813 , returned to Spain in 1820 and published the magazine El Liberal Guipuzcoano .

In 1823 he definitely emigrated to London. There he published the magazine Ocios de españoles emigrados from 1824 to 1827 with others .

He applied for the first English professorship in Spanish at University College London , founded in 1826 , but lost to Antonio Alcalá Galiano . Instead, he filled the chair in Spanish, which was also advertised for the first time at King's College London, from 1831 until his untimely death. His successor was José María Jiménez de Alcalá .
