The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a research institute of the Department of Energy of the United States , by the Battelle Memorial Institute is operated. It is part of the National Laboratory System , which includes a total of 17 research institutions in the USA. The headquarters of the PNNL is located in Richland in the US state of Washington . There are also branches in Sequim , Seattle and Portland (Oregon) . The PNNL currently employs around 4,300 people and is headed by Steven Ashby as director (as of June 2020).

history

In 1965, Batelle was awarded the contract to operate what was then known as the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (the National was officially added in 1995.)

Research fields

The PNNL is divided into four directorates (so-called Research Directorates ):

  • Earth and Biological Science (research and technology development with a focus on the interaction of biological systems with their environment)
  • Physical and Computational Science (understanding of complex multiphase systems at the molecular level)
  • Energy and Environment (reducing dependence on imported oil)
  • National Security (counter terrorism and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction )
