Sequim ( [ skwɪm ] ) is a city in Washington state . It is located on the Dungeness River at the foot of the Olympic Mountains and is part of Clallam County . The 2010 census showed a population of 6606 people in an area of 16.5 km². The name comes from the language of the Indians from the Klallam tribe , who lived in this area before the arrival of the first Europeans, and translates as: Hunting area (place for going to shoot)
climate
Sequim lies in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, which ensures a low precipitation rate of 410 mm per year in this region - hence the nickname "Sunny Sequim", because this value is among other things. a. comparable to Los Angeles , California . This is noteworthy in that some of the wettest temperate rainforests in the United States are not far away . This climatic peculiarity is sometimes referred to as the "blue hole of Sequim". The air currents caused by the Juan de Fuca Strait nevertheless ensure a relatively high level of humidity, which in places enables the growth of surprisingly diverse high forests. Originally the area was crossed by oak trees, which grew on sandy, loamy soil. Agriculture and the development of the Dungeness Valley, however, changed the ecosystem, so today u. a. also American arbutus , Coastal Pines , Oregon maples or western balsam poplars are found.
economy
The climatic conditions ensure that lavender cultivation around the city brings particularly good yields. This makes Sequim the "Lavender Capital of North America". In addition, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Sequim maintains its Marine Science Laboratory as a branch .
Twin cities
Sequim's twin city is Shisō (Hyōgo) in Japan . The two cities have a joint student exchange program that includes Sequim High and Middle Schools.
