Packard Humanities Institute

The Packard Humanities Institute is a foundation of the American classical philologist David W. Packard and is based in Los Altos , California .

David W. Packard, son of entrepreneur David Packard , established this foundation in 1987 to support projects in the fields of archeology, music, film preservation, historical document storage and early education.

The foundation received 11 percent of the Packard Foundation's capital , approximately $ 1.5 billion , in 1999 , making it one of the wealthiest foundations in the humanities. The foundation finances long-term projects in particular in the fields of history, literature and the music of the past.
