The Packhaus ( Estonian Pakkhoone ) is a listed building in the Estonian capital Tallinn ( German  Reval ). Currently (as of 2018) the house is used gastronomically as an Olde Hansa restaurant .

location

It is located in the historic old town of Reval on the west side of the Old Market (Estonian Vana turg ) at the address Alter Markt 1. The packing house is located in a corner on Markthalsgasse ( Vanaturu kael ), which opens north of the building onto the Old Market .

Architecture and history

The building belonged to the Reval municipal storage facility and was created from three old storage facilities. The granary on the street corner collapsed in 1654, but was rebuilt between 1655 and 1657. The three storage buildings were then combined into one building, which was designed in the Baroque style. This is how baroque portals and house stones were created on the massive facade. The older buildings were provided with anchors. In the new building, vaults were added both in the basement and on the ground floor, the remaining rooms were spanned with beam ceilings. The packing house was heatable. There was a spiral staircase at the transition between the old and the new building .

In the second half of the 17th century, the packing house served as a warehouse for goods from foreign merchants, and it also served as a place for concluding contracts.

In spite of partially impairing alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, the original external appearance was largely retained.

The building was registered as a monument on April 15, 1997 and is registered under number 3096 in the Estonian Register of Monuments .

Restaurant Olde Hansa

In 1997 the 300-seat restaurant Olde Hansa was opened in the house, which became one of the more famous sights of Reval. The furnishings, food and drinks, crockery and the clothing of the staff of the restaurant, which extends over three floors, are based on the Hanseatic era. Original recipes of the time are used and therefore ingredients that only came to Europe after the 15th century are dispensed with . For example, no potatoes or corn are used. Instead, there are many game dishes on the menu, including elk , bear and pheasant . Cinnamon beer and pepper schnapps are also served as drinks . There is a fireplace room on the third floor.

In 2005 a shop was opened in the packing house selling goods based on the Middle Ages.
