Padilla de Duero is a northern Spanish village that administratively belongs to the municipality ( municipio ) Peñafiel in the province of Valladolid in the autonomous community of Castile and León .

Padilla de Duero is located about three kilometers northwest of Peñafiel at an altitude of about 755 meters above sea level. d. M. on the Duero River . The provincial capital Valladolid is about 53 kilometers (driving distance) to the west.

economy
Agriculture, which used to include some cattle breeding (especially pigs and chickens), traditionally plays the largest role in the economic life of the small town, but the number of inhabitants is steadily declining. The red wines produced here are marketed through the denomination Ribera del Duero .
history
The area was inhabited by the Celtic Vaccaei tribe as early as pre-Roman times - on the basis of excavations that revealed the remains of a settlement as well as a craftsmen's quarter and a secluded cemetery ( necropolis ), archaeologists assume that it was around The settlement is about the ancient Pintia , which was located in Valladolid for a long time - but without archaeological findings. An iron shield decorated with niello ornaments was discovered on the Las Ruedas parcel , which is now kept in the Museo de Valladolid . Ceramic jugs with grave goods were also discovered.

Finds from Roman and Visigothic times were also discovered on the 125 hectare excavation site , so that a long, continuous settlement of the square can be assumed, which continued into the Middle Ages and modern times. Until 1970 Padilla de Duero was an independent municipality; then the place was incorporated into Peñafiel.

- The parish church of the village ( Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción ) is a simple rural building with precisely hewn stones from the 16th century. The west facade is completely unadorned and has only a small round window; the rectangular apse is integrated into the basement of the bell tower . A Romanesque portal can still be seen in the southern transept facade, which belonged to a previous building. The single-nave church is accessed via a Renaissance- style south portal.
