Painted Stone Portage is a portage on the watershed between the drainage basins of the Nelson and Hayes Rivers in the Canadian province of Manitoba . It was used by the Hudson's Bay Company for fur trading expeditions from York Factory into Canada until the 19th century . With only about 10 meters between the Hayes and the Echimamish River , it is probably the shortest portage between two drainage basins.
