Palácio Nacional de Queluz

The Palácio Nacional de Queluz , also called Palácio Real de Queluz , in German National Palace of Queluz , is one of the largest Rococo palace complexes in Europe. It is located in the city of Queluz , near Lisbon in Portugal . It is also known as the "Portuguese Versailles".

history

It was used as a summer residence for D. Pedro III. , the later Prince Consort of Queen Dona Maria I , designed in the 18th century by the Portuguese architects Mateus Vicente de Oliveira and Manuel Caetano de Sousa . Work began in 1747. One wing of the complex was designed by the French architect Jean Baptiste Robillon and built between 1785 and 1792. Today it serves as a guest house for state guests. The Royal Palace Theater in the palace was inaugurated on December 17, 1778, on the first anniversary of the Queen's coronation.

After the palace of Ajuda was destroyed in a fire in 1794, Queluz served Prince Regent João VI. and his successors, until their flight from Napoléon Bonaparte to Brazil, as the official residence.

The palace complex also has an extensive park.
