Palácio da Justiça (Porto)
The Palácio de Justiça (German Justizpalast ) is a courthouse in the center of the Portuguese city of Porto . It is located on Campos dos Mártires da Pátria in the former municipality of Miragaia , now part of the newly founded inner city municipality . Today it houses the Court of Appeal ( Tribunal de Relação ) of Porto.
Construction work on the courthouse began in 1958 and was completed in 1961. President Américo Tomás inaugurated the building on October 20, 1961. The architect Raul Rodrigues Lima , who had planned numerous cinemas, courthouses and prisons, was responsible for the design of the Palace of Justice . The building covers an area of around 3600 square meters with a main facade of 95 meters in length.
Architecturally, the building is characterized by a strongly stylized neoclassicism. Rodrigues Lima quoted courthouses from Paris, Vienna and Milan. The granite facade of the building is divided towards the entrance by a gallery of ten columns, in which there are four statues by the sculptor Euclides Vaz , each representing the cardinal virtues . To the south of the entrance is a statue of Justitia by the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida , who, among other things, was responsible for the design of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos in Lisbon.
In the database of the Sistema de Informação para o Património Arquitectónico (SIPA), the building has the number 15546.
