The Palestinian National Initiative (Al-Mubadara) ( Arabic المبادرة الوطنية الفلسطينية al-Mubadara al-Wataniyya al-Filistiniyya) is a Palestinian movement and party with a social democratic background. In 2008 she was accepted into the Socialist International (SI).

background

Al-Mubadara was founded on June 17, 2002 by a group of Palestinian politicians and prominent activists as a political movement of the so-called “Third Way” in Ramallah , West Bank . Founding members are the doctor Haidar Abdel Shafi (1919–2007, Gaza), who was Vice-President of the Palestinian National Council in the 1960s and interim president of the PLO from 1967 to 1968, and the doctor and civil rights activist Mustafa Barghouthi (* 1954, West Bank), who is now chairman who is Al-Mubadara, as well as the Jerusalem engineer Ibrahim Dakkak (* 1929). The Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said was also one of the supporters of Al-Mubadara until his death in 2003.

Party platform

Al-Mubadara is currently still in the process of drawing up an official party program , so there are only preliminary guidelines and principles of the party so far. It sees itself as a secular and democratic alternative, as a “third way” alongside the existing large political blocs Fatah and Hamas . Its main declared goal is the "realization of national Palestinian rights and a lasting, just peace". From this she derives the following goals:

  • An end to the Israeli occupation by removing all Israeli settlements.
  • The establishment of an independent, democratic and sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
  • Ensuring the right of return for Palestinian refugees.
  • The implementation of all relevant UN resolutions.

The basis of their approach is always non-violent resistance against the Israeli occupation. It also calls for national unity, an end to corruption and programs to support the Palestinian people in order to ultimately ensure economic growth and social, political and economic stability in the Palestinian territories .

elections

In January 2005, Al-Mubadara Chairman Dr. Mustafa Barghouti as an independent candidate in the Palestinian presidential election. With 19.48% of the vote, he achieved the second-best result behind PLO chairman Mahmud Abbas . His candidacy was also supported by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine ( PFLP ), which had previously failed to put forward its own candidate. During the election campaign, Barghouti was repeatedly arrested by the Israeli military and his freedom of movement restricted. He later accused both Israel and the Palestinian Authority of discrimination. In the elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council ( PLC ) on January 25, 2006, Al-Mubadara ran with a few independent candidates under the name of "Independent Palestine". With 2.6% of the vote, however, it fell far short of expectations. The two seats in the Legislative Council that Al-Mubadara won with it were occupied by Mustafa Barghouti and Rawya Rashad Sa-eed al-Shawa .

According to a survey by the Jerusalem Media and Communications Center , 6.2% of Palestinians elected Mustafa Barghouti as president in October 2008. The same poll also found that only 0.6% thought Al-Mubadara was the most trustworthy of all factions.

Institutional integration and electorate

Al-Mubadara is closely linked to several Palestinian NGOs, above all Medical Relief , the Health, Development, Information and Policy Institute (HDIP) and the Palestine Monitor . These connections exist in particular through Mustafa Barghouti. Doctors and other academics in particular, but also students and the middle class, support the Al-Mubadara.
