The Palacio Barolo is an office building with 22 floors in the Montserrat district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires , Avenida de Mayo 1370.

description

The Palacio Barolo was built between 1919 and 1923 based on a design by the Italian architect Mario Palanti . The building has 22 floors, is around 100 meters high and has a usable area of 16,630 m². The architectural style is eclectic . The structure consists entirely of reinforced concrete ; the Argentine branch of the German construction company Wayss & Freytag AG was commissioned with the execution .

The building was commissioned by the entrepreneur Luis Barolo. Barolo was an Italian immigrant who came to Argentina in 1890 and became wealthy by making knitwear. The design of the building is similar to that of the Palacio Salvo in Montevideo , Uruguay .

The Palacio Barolo was designed in harmony with the cosmos as described in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy . The 22 floors are divided into three sections. The basement and the first floor represent hell, floors 1 to 14 represent purgatory and 15 to 22 represent heaven. The height of 100 meters corresponds to the 100 songs of the Divine Comedy.

The lighthouse on the roof of the building can still be seen in Montevideo.

When the Palacio Barolo was completed in 1923, it was not only the tallest building in the city, but all of South America. It remained the tallest house in Buenos Aires until 1935 when the Edificio Kavanagh was completed. In 1997 the Palacio Barolo was added to the list of National Historic Monuments .
