Egon Bernoth

Egon Georg Horst Bernoth (born July 8, 1920 in Halle (Saale) , † May 10, 1991 in Magdeburg ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician .

Life

Egon Bernoth was born in Halle in 1920 as the son of the commercial clerk Carl Bernoth . He attended school here and passed his Abitur in 1940 at the Reformrealgymnasium . He completed his medical studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the University of Greifswald . After his compulsory assistantship at the University Clinics in Halle from 1948 to 1950, Bernoth received his doctorate in 1950 and initially worked as an assistant doctor at the Physiological Institute. From 1951 to 1964 he worked at the University Women's Clinic under Helmut Kraatz , Gustav Mestwerdt (1910–1979) and Karlheinz Sommer . In 1955 he became a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics and qualified as a professor in 1958 . He was a senior physician and assistant professor and since 1960 deputy director of the University Women's Hospital.

In 1963 he was appointed professor with a teaching assignment and in 1964 professor with a full teaching assignment at the University of Halle. In December 1964, Egon Bernoth was appointed to succeed Josef-Peter Emmrich , who died on November 28, 1963 at the age of only 54, as director of the Magdeburg State Women's Clinic and member of the faculty of the Magdeburg Medical Academy , and from September 1969 to professor with a chair .

Under his leadership, the clinic developed into a center for sterility treatment. He also dealt with biophysical studies of radiation therapy for female genital cancer and problems of perinatology . The senior physicians Martin Link and Wolfgang Weise worked under Bernoth , with whom he published a textbook on gynecology. After Egon Bernoth retired in August 1985, the management of the state women's clinic was transferred to Bernd Seifert . In 1986, Bernoth took on a one-year visiting professorship at the Women's Clinic at the University of Zurich .

He died in Magdeburg in 1991 at the age of 70.

Honors

Egon Bernoth was chairman of the Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics Saxony-Anhalt , since 1980 member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina and member of the editorial board of the Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie. In 1978 he was honored with the title of Medical Councilor. In 1981 Bernoth was awarded the Hufeland Gold Medal and in 1983 the Stoeckel Prize of the Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics of the GDR .
