The Palacio Federal Legislativo , (also known as Capitolio de Caracas ) is a historic building in Caracas , Venezuela , and the seat of the National Assembly .

history
The magnificent building, commissioned by President Antonio Guzmán Blanco in 1872, was built in the neoclassical style according to the design of the architect Luciano Urdaneta Vargas . The foundation stone was laid on September 21, 1872. On February 19, 1873, part of the three-part structure was opened. The first meeting was held in the House of Representatives on February 27, 1873. However, the complete completion with the Salón Elíptico crowned by an impressive golden dome did not take place until 1877. The dome of the saloon ceiling shows a painting by Martín Tovar y Tovar, which vividly depicts the decisive battle of Carabobo in the Venezuelan war of independence against Spanish colonial rule.
The facade is symmetrical. It has a portico in the middle and three columnar portals, which are presented in the middle by two caryatids symbolizing right and freedom. The building is home to a number of notable paintings by Venezuelan artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including Martín Tovar y Tovar , Antonio Herrera Toro , Tito Salas , Pedro Centeno Vallenilla, and Emilio Jacinto Mauri . A total of 101 works are shown in the historical art collection in the Salón de los Escudos .
The architectural complex was declared a Monumento Histórico Nacional on August 22, 1997.
