The Palacio Fernández Anchorena (now the Vatican embassy)

The Palacio Fernández Anchorena is an architecturally significant former residential building in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is located on Avenida Alvear 1637 in the Recoleta district and is now the seat of the Vatican embassy in Argentina.

overview

The construction of the villa was commissioned by Juan Antonio Fernández and his wife Rosa de Anchorena. It was designed in 1907 by the Franco-Argentine architect Eduardo Le Monnier in the style of the Second Empire , which was very popular at the time in the upper society of Argentina. The building was completed in 1909, but the couple never moved in.

The Palacio Fernández Anchorena was then made available by the family for receptions and public ceremonies. From 1922 to 1928 the house served as the official residence of President Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear .

In 1940 the Palacio was sold to Adelia María Harilaos de Olmos, the widow of the Cordóbesian landowner Ambrosio Harilaos de Olmos. The founder of the Catholic Women's League and donor of a fund to support working women bequeathed the Palacio to the Holy See in 1947 . After her death in 1949 the Palacio became an Apostolic Nunciature. Pope Pius XII Cardinal Pacelli was already a guest of Harilaos de Olmos in 1934 when the Eucharist Congress was taking place in Buenos Aires.
