The Palacio Taranco is a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .

It currently houses the Museo de Artes Decorativas and is located in the heart of the Ciudad Vieja on Plaza Zabala adjacent to streets 25 de Mayo , Solís and 1 ° de Mayo . The twelve-meter-high, three-story Palacio Taranco covers an area of ​​1481 m². The listed building, designed by the French architects Charles-Louis Girault , the builders of the Petit Palais in Paris, and Jules León Chifflot , was built between 1908 and 1910 on the basis of a plan drawn up in 1907/08 and originally served as the residence of the Ortiz Taranco brothers and was designed for residential use only. The construction costs for the time amounted to an enormous 321,000 pesos. In 1925 the English king was housed in the building on the occasion of his visit to Uruguay. In 1943 the state acquired the Palacio Taranco for the Ministry of Culture and in 1972 the museum was set up on the premises. Three years later it was classified as a Monumento Histórico Nacional . In 1979 the building was the site of the Acta de Montevideo signing . At times, the Academia Nacional de Letras of the Ministry of Education and Culture was also housed in the building. In 1997 restoration work was carried out under the direction of the architects J. Lezica and E. Ferrari . During the Día del Patrimonio , the Palacio Taranco is one of the most visited places.
