In 1401 a certain Hans Westenberger sold a property with a house in today's Herrengasse 14 to the Lords of Traun . In 1651 Ernst Graf von Abensperg-Traun bought the neighboring building and had a representative palace built. It is not known exactly who built the building, but the architectural duo Giovanni Pietro Tencalla and Filiberto Lucchese are widely regarded as builders.

Just one year later, the palace is said to have been the first house in Vienna to be supplied with a water pipe. The palace burned down during the Turkish siege of 1683 and was rebuilt around 1700. In 1855 the Imperial and Royal National Bank , which wanted to enlarge the bank building adjoining the palace, acquired the palace and had it torn down. Heinrich Ferstel was commissioned with the new building and built the Palais Ferstel , which is named after him today .
