Palais at the Glückstadt harbor

The Palais for contemporary art - after an ambiguous inscription on the house, also often called Palais Quasi non Possidentes ( Latin ; "as if we weren't the haves ", cf. 1 Cor 7,30  VUL ) - is a building in the historic city center of Glückstadt in Schleswig-Holstein . It houses the exhibition rooms of a Glückstadt art association. Due to an uncertain financial situation, the house is threatened with closure from 2011.

The palace was originally built in the Renaissance style between 1630 and 1631 and remodeled in baroque style around 1697 . The two-storey palace is oriented with its eaves towards the Glückstadt harbor, the eight-axis facade is designed by colossal pilasters . At the time of construction it was in direct proximity to the Glückstadt Castle , which was once located here . Inside the building there are still some features from the 17th and 18th centuries. The floor plan is structured in baroque style; some of the doors are lined up en filade . Some of them still have contemporary lintels, others have rococo skylights . In some salons, rudiments of the earlier wall paintings, ceiling stucco and old stoves have been preserved.

After the neighboring castle became increasingly dilapidated, the building served as the seat of the government chancellery from 1700 to 1752, after which the Wasmer-Palais , also located in Glückstadt, took over this task. The house Quasi non Possidentes came into private ownership. In 1986 the building was restored.

Since 2000, the building has been operated as a “Palais for Current Art” by the association of the same name. Solo exhibitions of well-known contemporary artists (e.g. Adam Jankowski in 2001) are shown on 500 m², but now also thematic exhibitions (e.g. “Buds want to explode”).
