The Wasmer-Palais is a baroque city palace in Glückstadt in Schleswig-Holstein . Along with the Brockdorff Palais, it is one of the most important secular buildings in the city.

The Wasmer-Palais

history

The palace was built in sections from 1700 to 1728 for the conference councilors Conrad Wasmer (1627–1705) and Jacob Johann von Wasmer (1671–1741) and his wife Anna Johanna, geb. von Rosenschild (1683–1751) built as a residential building. In 1752 it was auctioned for Frederick V and designated as the seat of the government chancellery, which had been housed in the Palais Quasi non Possidentes since 1700 . An apartment was set up in the Wasmer-Palais for possible stays by members of the Danish royal family in Glückstadt, because the dilapidated Glückstadt Castle had already been demolished in 1710. In 1806 the house was taken over by the Holstein Higher Court, the highest administrative and judicial authority in the country. In the course of the coalition wars and after the Second Sea Battle of Copenhagen , Denmark declared war on England on October 31, 1807 - the seat of the highest Danish authority that was still intact at the time. In 1876 the palace became a boys' school.

The historic building now houses the local adult education center . Due to its usage, it is not open to visitors, but can occasionally be viewed as part of regular city tours.

Building history

The Wasmerpalais is a three-winged, plastered brick building. The middle main wing is somewhat older than the side wings that border the small courtyard. The portal is adorned with a cartouche of the builder's coat of arms. The interior of the house was furnished in the Louis quatorze style by the plasterer Andrea Maini from Arogno from 1728 to 1729 ; the most important room in the house is the large ballroom on the upper floor.

In the past few years the Wasmer-Palais has increasingly been in need of renovation. There was damage to the facade and, among other things, sponge infestation was found. The building has been extensively restored since 2008. The estimated costs of 960,000 € were borne by the city of Glückstadt, the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the monument protection office. The work was finished in 2009.
