history

In 1916, on the initiative of the Swiss Trade and Industry Association, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Canton of Vaud and with the support of the City of Lausanne, the first Swiss sample fair “Comptoir Vaudois d'échantillons” took place. This approach, which was new at the time, should establish itself in the future. The first Comptoir suisse took place in September 1920. Since that year only one event could not take place, in 1939, due to the outbreak of war. It is noteworthy that the first official NASA event in Europe took place as part of the Comptoir Suisse in 1962.

The palace that was to become the main building dates back to 1921. Since 1957 it has been called the Palais de Beaulieu. Before that, during the Second World War , prisoners of war were housed here. From 1949 onwards, the construction of a theater hall was discussed between the city administration and Société Coopérative du Comptoir Suisse and in 1954 the Théâtre de Beaulieu was opened. It is the main venue for the Béjart Ballet Lausanne , the Orchester de la suisse romande and the La Paternelle theater.

New buildings were built on the west side of the site between 1920 and 1940. From 1950 to 1954 the areas in the south and east were expanded. The north halls were built in 1960. Various renovations followed. In the Beaulieu congress center, in addition to the Comptoir Suisse, an increasing number of congresses, cultural and business events are taking place.

Since 2000, the Beaulieu site has belonged to a foundation under public law, the Fondation de Beaulieu, which was jointly established by the  canton of Vaud , the city of Lausanne and the agglomerations (Lausanne Région and the Union of Communes of Vaud UCV). The Beaulieu Foundation is responsible for maintenance, renovation and logistics, but also for the strategic and economic development of the site. She also manages the congresses and events and, in collaboration with Opus One SA, the Théâtre de Beaulieu. The tenant MCH Beaulieu Lausanne SA, successor to the Société Coopérative du Comptoir Suisse, manages the exhibitions and operates the “Halles Sud”. Eldora Traiteur SA, a subsidiary of the Eldora SA group and formerly DSR, has been responsible for the site's gastronomy since 2006.

The Beaulieu Foundation initiated the Beaulieu 2020 renovation program, which will run from 2000 to 2020. Renovations to the palace have been underway since 2001 and are still ongoing. The Halles Sud were renewed in 2010. In 2014, the Lausanne electorate rejected the project for a tower in the east area, the Taoua Tower, with a restaurant and a hotel. This rejection led to a reorganization of the Beaulieu 2020 project and the partners involved. The rooms in the Palais de Beaulieu have been reallocated since 2014. In the future, the Institut et Haute Ecole de la Santé La Source, the International Sports Court and a public restaurant will be located here.
