The palatal hook is a diacritical mark that was previously included in the International Phonetic Alphabet .
The palatal hook was used to represent palatalized consonants, such as those found in Russian . It usually had the shape of a small hook to the left, which, in contrast to a normal hook, did not connect to the consonant, but stood separately on the side. The characters ʃ and ʒ had special shapes with a loop (ʆ, ʓ), but some authors also used the palatal hook here. The palatal hook has not officially been used since 1989, instead the palatalization should be represented by a superscript small j .
Unicode contains prefabricated characters in the Unicode block Phonetic extensions, additions , further characters can be displayed by adjusting the combined Palatal hook at code point U + 0321.
